This week both groups went to ACES for our winter field study. What fun. Nice fresh snow and great weather! We discussed the animals signs we may see in winter and learned about what some animals do in winter. Did you know that Bats hibernate upside down? We played a Mouse and Weasel game and had several wildlife challenges. It was a great time!
We are so lucky to have 2 Junior Achievement Volunteers coming on Wednesdays. These volunteers take time from their lives, both are bankers, to come and teach us some Social Studies. We have talked about our neighborhoods and families and this week we discussed the difference between a "want" and a "need". Ask you kids what the difference it!
This year we have been learning all sorts of reading strategies both for how to decode words so we can read them and strategies on how to comprehend or understand what we read. Some of our comprehension strategies are: Making a connection to your own life, making an connection to another piece of writing, retelling a story in our own words, visualizing something in the story and finally, WONDERING!! Over the last few weeks we have been working on Wondering. This week Miss Jill read a nonfiction story called "The Bumblebee Queen" about the life of a North American Queen Bee, what an interesting book. We did a lot of wondering with our partners and then went back out our journals to write our "wonders" down! The kids were really thinking and had lots of things that they were curious about!
In math we have been working on learning our doubles facts! We even learned a rap to help us remember it. Also this week our number dash (90 sec of working on math facts) was doubles facts and doubles + 1 facts. The kids did a great job it was their best dash so far this year! You will see this come home in their Friday Folders this week!
