jay Maher - Matthew's dad!
Today Matthew's dad Jay came to read us two great books and brought us a great and yummy treat!!
How many MARSHMALLOWS in a box of Lucky Charms??
Well we found out this week! We each got our own cup of lucky charms, we had to sort our the marshmallows and then graph how many we had. Then as a class we made a huge graph and used "friendly 10" and we found the total number. There were 292 marshmallows in the box we had...well maybe more since Miss Jen ate some;)
Do you know that we learn and talk about new words all the time. When Miss Jen does a read aloud we talk about all the new and interesting words and practice using them. This week 3 out of 4 of the words were easily acted out!
Today I asked the kids...How can we figure out how many teeth in all the kids in our class have lost? We had lots of great ideas, 1. Sit and count them all together. 2. At table groups figure out how many and then add all the tables together. 3. Do a survey. We voted and the survey won! So we all went around and found out how many teeth each person lost. Then we had a new question...How do find the total?
So I asked the kids to come up with an equation after we collected all our data. We got a wide variety of answers, from 27-81, Why were we all over the place with our answers? Not carefully adding, didn't collect all the data, lots of reasons.
We realized we could combine numbers and make tens. But first we could take all the 0s our. We had 6 kids who have not lost any teeth yet...those zeros were messing us up so we took them out of our equation. Then we found the 10s and add them all together. we have 8 tens=80 and 7 ones so the total amount of teeth lost is...87! Wow that is a lot of teeth!
