This week, Miss Denise, one of our forth grade teachers came to visit with us and read a great story "Hegdie's Surprise" to us. It was a great story. When she was finished reading she had a wonderful surprise for us! See some cute photos below!
Yesterday most of the first grade classes participated in the Marshmallow Challenge! What fun. Using one large marshmallow, 20 pieces of dried spaghetti and some tape. We tried to build the tallest structure possible that could hold the Marshmallow! We made a plan with our 3 person team and had to try to execute our plan when we were building. It took communication, problems solving and team work to even get started. Teams who worked the best together and listened to each other did the best job!
Miss Jill just found some great new math websites. Many of you asked how you can support your kids in math at home and here is a couple of great ideas. the IXL site covers all the 1st grade standards. The other is 1st grade fractions. If you have extra time and want to help your kids with math, here are two great ways!

This week our class started learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We learned that they start as a tiny egg then come out as tiny tiny, we mean really small caterpillars and the eat and eat and grow and grow. Our Caterpillers are about a week old and we can't believe how much they have grown...Today we did some caterpiller art to fancy up our classroom!
We have also been working on understanding more about numbers and what it really means when we add and subtract. We have been learning about 10s, and 1s and practicing trading them to make bigger numbers. We have learned a game called "sparkle", where we roll the dice and add 1s until we get to 10 if we have 10, ones in the ones place then we have to "SPARKLE" and trade those ones for a 10s rod. The kids really got into it and they seem to really have begun to understand our base ten number system.
Welcome to First Grade!
