A crucial part of learning to read and write it having strong understanding of phonics and phonemic awareness. Every week we do several activities that are phonics based. One of them being building words. Using the phonics feature of the week, this week is short vowel e. Student build words after being giving a clue about the word on their white boards. For example: They write the word "hen" then I say, now change the /h/ in hen to a /p/ what is the new word, they write it and then call out what the word is. Volunteers come up to write it on the board so everyone can self correct their own work!
It is so important to move our bodies! So at least once a day we stop our work and have a moving brain break. Sometimes that means a full on Dance Party!
This week was a week of firsts. The kids had their first experience with using the new Google Chrome books in our classroom. We started working on the program call Xtra Math which helps kids become more fluent with math facts.
Also we did our first group work. We all had to analyze some numbers and make a conclusion about what the numbers meant. We had counted our breaths while resting, after exercise and after doing a long calming breathing brain break. It was hard to work together and make sure everyone participated in the group work but we did pretty well!
You may have heard that we have 5th grade buddies that come to read with us one day a week. What a great way to share what we are learning about reading! We get to read 2 books that are hard that our buddies read to us and then we practice reading our browsing box, "just right" books to them. It is so fun. Next week we will go to the Middle School and see them!
Not only do we work hard on academics everyday, but we also make time for arts and crafts this week we are learning about apples and so made a torn paper apple tree. We are also working on a secret holiday project for our parents and each week one of the awesome mom volunteers are going to help us with an art project for it!
Welcome to First Grade!
Welcome to our classroom! Take a look around and check out what we are learning!
