This week we learned all about the States of Matter; Solids, Liquids and Gases! Did you know all solids, liquids and gases are made of the same things...ATOMS. Depending on how close together or spread out the Atoms are determines what state of matter something is! We acted out being the different atoms in a solid, a liquid and a gas, then we made a model of them with cherrios!
We have been working away at our new math program!! So proud of the kids that did their math homework!! This week we worked on combinations to 10 and also started doing some simple story problems, listening to the story, drawing a picture to match it and then solving it using an equation. Do you know the difference between a number bond, expression and equation...if not your kids should!! Ask them to find out! Also...how is an equation like a seesaw?
Today we made Lava Lamps! No we did not go back in time to the '70s, but we did do an awesome science experiment an even had some unscheduled explosions!!! Our experiment was mostly on density, did you know that water is more dense then vegetable oil? Well...it is! So we put water, oil and food coloring together in a water bottle, the oil stays on top and the water on the bottom. The food color only mixes with the water. Then we added glitter. Then to make the lava lamp we added some Alkeseltzer tabs...WHOA!!! When the tabs sink into the water on the bottom an amazing reaction happens, and it looks exactly like a lava lamp. Our surprise was that if we put the lids back on and waited a while then loosened the lid. BOOM! The lid went flying off the bottle because the AlkeSeltzer created a new gas, Carbon Dioxide in the bottle and it had no more room, so it blew the top right off the bottle!! Awesome! Give it a try at home! Go through the pictures below with your kids so they can explain what was going on! We also did a class experiment at the rug, with one full bottle of water and one full bottle of oil to see if we could mix them... Ask your kids what happened!
What an amazing fall day we had for our ACES trip! The colors this year are absolutely amazing! We talked about all the signs of fall and then when on a search for 6 different types of local trees and bushes, Aspen, Cottonwood, Spruce, Geranium, Rose hip and Maple. We were able to find all 6 some of them we found many, many examples of! Thanks to Javi and Grandpa Wayne for coming with us! While we were out in the field we collected some great leaves and made an awesome fall picture! We also had some extra time so were able to spend some time at the yellow brick park before returning to school!! What a great day!
