Charlotte Lemons was the Wizard of the Week this week!! She did a great experiment about the power of SOAP!!
The fat in the milk reacts to the soap causing it to move! So cool! This is why a good soap works so well on greasy hands or dishes!! The soap molecules connect to the fat and then are able to be washed away by the water!
In first grade we do A LOT of writing. You may have heard about our small moment stories. We're really good at writing stories about our own lives, because after all we're experts on us! Our focus right now is zooming in and adding as much detail as possible. We will be starting Poetry next week. Some poetry is so vivid we can make pictures or movies in our minds of what we hear. Our goal is to put the same juicy words and feeling in our everyday writing! Check out our pictures this fun poem!
Miss Jen did your Wizard of the Week Science experiment this week! Her question was, will an apple boat sink or Float? We all made predictions and we were split 50/50. Half of us thought yes, and half thought no that they would sink.. So we all made and apple boat and discovered that apples do Float. We realized that apples float because they have air. Do scissors float? How about a pumpkin? Ask your kids what happened!

Eric Carle is a famous author and artist. You may have heard of him...he wrote the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar as well as many many other books. His illustration are unique and fun! We were channeling our inner artist when we made "Eric Carle Paper" also known as Paste paper it is a fun recipe of flour, rice flour, Dr. Bonner's soap, Glycerin, water and paint. We worked with Miss Jill's class to create some great textures! Messy and beautiful!
We are working on making number combinations for 5, 6, 7, and 8. We have been using real live children to make different combinations for each number. How can you find different amounts hiding inside the whole number.
We have been learning a lot of Math Vocabulary so far here are some of the words your kids should be learning: number bond, equation, expression, number sentence, part and whole numbers, plus and equal.
For example in the above equation (number sentence) the expression is 3+5 the parts are 3 and 5 and the whole number is 8. This + is a plus. This = is an equal.
